Roll over Ravi Shankar – outsiders play the blues in India

The Washington Post has a story today that should gladden the hearts of blues lovers and anyone who really doesn’t like Bollywood music.  The story introduces  Indian blues singer, Tipriti “Tips” Kharbangar, from India’s wild tribal northeast.  The sound of the blues is still fairly unusual in India, but this young woman and her band come from a very atypical Indian town,  Shillong, that despite its remoteness, has an eclectic music tradition that includes gospel choirs and an annual Bob Dylan celebration.  By the way, Tips has turned down offers to sing in Bollywood films.
