No racists in my family tree

Looking for hurricane news in the Times and found this – a very smart analysis of how popular entertainment, like the movie, The Help, distorts the reality of race relations during the segregation era.  The author of this piece doesn’t say it, but it seems to me that one of the unstated goals of these depictions of America’s racist past is to comfort white people – to tell us that most of our forbearers were decent, if somewhat timid, secret believers in universal brotherhood.
